Health & Safety
Our number one priority
Health and Safety is Midland Steel's number one priority. They believe that everyone has the right to work in a safe environment and always prioritise safety regardless of commercial or financial pressures.
Their Health and Safety management systems are OHSAS 18001 Certified which demonstrates both the robustness of their safety practices and their committment to a process of continuous improvement.
Midland Steel's committment to Health and Safety is also demonstrated through their ongoing drive to reduce accident rates to zero. They aim to acheive this through ongoing employee education and engagement, as an integrated part of everyday practices.
OHSAS 18001 Certification
Midland Steel's Health and Safety managment systems are certified to OHSAS 18001; the highest international Health & Safety certification available. OHSAS 18001 provides a framework for a structured, systematic approach to the achievement of its aims and objectives. Like ISO9001 or ISO14001, it is a ‘common sense’ set of requirements designed to monitor and improve health and safety performance, putting in place a range of management controls within a formalised documented system.
'Don't Walk by' Campaign
Midland Steel's 'Don't walk by' campaign was developed to increase the reporting of near miss incidents. Midland Steel firmly believe that the only way to reduce accident and injury rates and reach their target of zero harm is to encourage employees to think safety first and to report all hazards and near misses encountered whilst performing their roles.
Tony Woods, Managing Director of Midland Steel is a strong advocate of this campaign, stating recently that "The reporting of near miss incidents is a vital element in our Health and Safety education process. If we can't identify elements within our working environment which present a risk to employee safety then we simply can't improve."
As part of this campaign, "Don't Walk by: Report near misses" has been printed on the back of every Hi-visability vest to reinforce this message and to keep safety at the forefront of every employees mind.
Putting Safety First
Midland Steel only deliver reinforcing steel products using Safety Trailers; the safest flat bed delivery system available. Safety is Midland Steel's number one priority; whether its the safety of depot employees, delivery drivers or members of the public and employees of client organisations. Midland Steel's entire delivery fleet have Safety Trailers fitted as standard.
Midland Steel have developed their own safe storage containers; aptly named 'Safety Bins'. Their primary use is for the transporation of smaller reinforcing steel elements such as links and accessories such as spacers, tying wire and safety caps. They have been especially designed to fit safely with the safety trailer system, providing further enhanced safety during transit and in both the loading and offloading processes.
